(And it takes way too long to randomize twelve characters using dice, I need to figure out a better way to do it if I’m going to do more of these.) And then I accidentally went somewhere else in the middle of writing this entry and lost half of it. So frustrating. 1. Who would make a better college professor, 6 (Julian) or 11 (Cassie)?
Julian, by far. He’s already a space librarian, it’s not that much farther to professor. I could see Cassie working with preschool/elementary age kids, or maybe some kind of mechanic’s apprenticeship, but she’s only got about a sixth-grade education herself and she’s really not suited for academia.
2. Do you think 2 (Mag) is hot? How hot?
Is this question asking how attracted I am to my own characters? I’m really confused.
Mag doesn’t look much like her playby in my head, incidentally- she was originally from a boffing LARP that didn’t use PBs, so I just looked for someone who had decent crazy eyes and called it a day. I figure she’s fairly attractive, in a wholesome farm girl kind of way. (Which is a LIE. Mag is not wholesome at all.)
3. 12 (Michelle) sends 8 (Dr. Lucas) on a mission. What is it, and does it succeed?
Given that one of them is a hundred years out of time, I’m going to say the good doctor is now a vampire, since that’s easier than backwards time travel. (Probably a Gangrel, since Wild West and all.) Michelle probably wants his help sneaking into the registrar’s office late at night to alter her grades. :P
4. What is or would be 9 (Sammy)'s favourite book?
Mm, I’m thinking Snow Crash. Ey’d be into cyberpunk, and it seems more teen/anarch friendly than Neuromancer. (Those two being the only pre-1994 cyberpunk I’ve actually read.)
5. Would it make more sense for 2 (Mag) to swear fealty to 6 (Julian), or the other way around?
Mag does contracts more than she does fealty, but Julian isn’t trusting enough to swear fealty to anyone at the moment (and he’s a much better judge of character than to swear fealty to Mag, especially), so I could see Mag doing the swearing, especially if she needed to get out of a bind of some sort. (And now I’m picturing some weird 40K version of that scene from Warrior’s Apprentice... XD )
6. For whatever reason, 5 (Vetiver) is looking for a roommate. Should 5 (Vetiver) share a studio apartment with 9 (Sammy) or with 10 (Helen)?
Vetiver where are your parents and/or motley why is no one taking care of you Definitely Sammy. If they could figure out a way to keep em safe from the sunlight while letting Vetiver come and go, Sammy’d make sure Vetiver was fed most of the time and let her do her own thing, which is exactly what she wants/needs. (And I like that the Nos and the Sluagh wound up sharing an apartment- it seems very appropriate.) Helen would either think Vetiver’s a poor misled child in need of saving and try to convert her/get her to a family who could raise her “properly”, or she’d think of her as another monster who’d stolen a human body (which, to be fair, is not all that far off). She wouldn’t (deliberately) attack her if they'd made it to the "roommates and tolerating each other" stage, but she’d project her own self-loathing issues and be really unpleasant to be around. (And she’s a very young Brujah with no one to really mentor her, so she has serious control issues and might hurt Vetiver accidentally.)
7. 2 (Mag), 7 (Denise), and 12 (Michelle) have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?
Burgers, I’d think- Denise is a vampire and not eating, anything not freeze-dried is a treat for Mag, and Michelle could probably use the iron. These three don’t have all that much in common- conversation would mostly consist of Mag telling war stories and the other two being fascinated for completely different reasons. (Mag and Denise would probably hit it off, actually, and Michelle would just be quietly facepalming and going “ugh, why do I even hang out with you two?)
8. 3 (Kelsey) challenges 10 (Helen) to a duel. What happens?
Ouch.
These poor kids.
This could happen so easily, too. Neither of them comes from a culture with formal rules for dueling, but a challenge to a fight? These two are so alike, it’d be almost inevitable. They’d start snapping at each other as soon as they met, and escalate to yelling pretty quickly, and sooner or later Kelsey would say something like “You think you’re so tough? Come at me!” Because she’d have no way of noticing that Helen carries herself like a fighter, or what have you, she’d have no idea how outclassed she was. And Helen would have been working so hard on self-control and not attacking vampires on sight (maybe she thinks she’s no better than they are anymore, maybe she’s just trying to remember that she’ll be no use to anyone if she gets herself killed taking on more than she can handle), and here’s this brat practically daring her? She’d lose it.
And it’d be a really short fight, too. They might’ve both been vampires the same length of time, but Helen’s been training almost since she could walk. Kelsey probably doesn’t even know how to make a proper fist. Helen’d feel awful about it, at least, once she came out of frenzy- kind of bitterly triumphant, but it’d be a horrible hollow victory- she was just a dumb kid, what did she think she was doing, didn’t she realize she was way out of her league? Not to mention she’d feel guilty about losing control, and afraid the demon was taking over. And I don’t know if vampire digestive systems are capable of upset the way humans’ are, but this would be the first time since her change that Helen wasn’t on the edge of starvation. She’s going to have terrible associations with feeling full, and it’ll do her Thing About Blood no help at all.
9. If 1 (Prudence) stole 8 (Dr. Lucas)'s most precious possession, how would 8 (Dr. Lucas) get it back?
Offer to bargain for it, while trying to hide how much it means to him. It’s probably something from his past life, maybe a locket or letter from his fiancee.
10. Suggest a title for a story in which 7 (Denise) and 12 (Michelle) both attain what they most desire.
Hmm. They’re kind of on opposite sides of a supernatural gang war. Maybe it’s the first volume of a trilogy? I’m going to go with what seems to be the World of Darkness theme and call it Blood and Thunder.
11. What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted 4 (Iris) and 1 (Prudence) to work together?
Someone Comes To Town- probably someone from both of their pasts, and they discover common ground despite their clashing personalities. I’d say it’s the dude who got Iris her cabin in Canada, come back to finally collect on that old debt.
12. If 7 (Denise) visited you for the weekend, how would you get along?
Awfully. I’d be tempted to dump her at a quad party and tell her to have fun, but that would probably end in death, so I guess she’d just sleep in my closet during the day and we’d be critical of each other’s lifestyle choices at night. (And I wouldn’t feel safe sleeping with her there, and she wouldn’t be able to get back into the dorm without me to open the door, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable with her being unsupervised in town anyway, so I guess I’d just put the shade down and try to sleep late in the mornings.)
13. If you could command 3 (Kelsey) to perform any one task or service for you, what would it be?
Stop being so stubborn and let me take care of you Probably just “tell me more about supernatural stuff, this is fascinating.” Of all the people on this list, I think she has the least number of useful abilities. (Although IF we’d known each other for years and were close enough friends that it wouldn’t be weird, and IF she was comfortable enough with that side of her powers, I might ask her to induce lust for me so I could see for myself what it feels like and whether it actually is the same as what for lack of a better term I will call “intense cuddle-desire”. FOR SCIENCE!)
14. Does anyone on your friends list write or draw anything regarding 11 (Cassie)?
What’s the point of this question? Was this meme originally for fandom characters? (That said, if anyone with better artistic skills than me would like to draw a picture of Cassie, I will trade you a custom crocheted dice bag/plushie/etc.)
15. If 2 (Mag) had to choose sides between 4 (Iris) and 5 (Vetiver), which would it be?
Having the fae-child in this list is getting weirder and weirder. I’m not even sure what they’d be disagreeing over, unless maybe Vetiver has some overdue books she insists she returned? Whatever it is, Mag isn’t so much in the habit of getting involved in other people’s problems unless she’s getting paid for it, so at most she’d maybe chime in with “hey, give the kid a break”.
16. What might 10 (Helen) shout while charging into battle?
“Die, demon scum”? Something like that. Although if she was frenzying, which is likely, it’d be more like “HHUUUUUAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH”. Maybe “Go to Hell” if she was feeling punny.
17. If you chose a song to represent 8 (Dr. Lucas), which song would you choose?
“If” I chose a song? :P All my characters have theme songs, except the really minor ones. (And Mag, because I don’t know enough cheerful songs about lighting things on fire. She has a handful of semi-appropriate songs instead.) Lucas’s is “Some Nights”, by Fun.
18. 1 (Prudence), 6 (Julian), and 12 (Michelle) are having dim sum at a Chinese restaurant. There is only one scallion pancake, and they all reach for it at the same time. Who gets to eat it?
Julian would bow out right away, because he’s awkwardly gentlemanly like that. Michelle and Prudence might have a bit of a staring contest, but Prudence tends to weird people out, and I seriously doubt a scallion pancake is important enough for Michelle to waste a blood point activating Presence, so Pru would get it eventually.
19. What might be a good pick-up line for 2 (Mag) to use on 10 (Helen)?
...Mag tends to prefer the menfolk, but okay. Um... “Nice knives. Mind if I have a look?”
20. What would 5 (Vetiver) most likely be arrested for?
Truancy (do they arrest people for that?), maybe trespassing. I’d say disorderly conduct, but running around talking to the air and throwing pennies is perfectly normal behavior for a nine-year-old.
21. What is 6 (Julian)'s secret?
He has implants that he doesn’t remember getting. Or using, until recently. He’s not sure if this is heresy or not.
22. If 11 (Cassie) and 9 (Sammy) were racing to a destination, who would get there first?
Depends on the distance- anything on foot, Sammy will reach first. (Apparently I messed up Cassie’s stats at character creation and her speed was half what it should have been for two years. I decided she finally found and fixed the stuck piston in her knee.) If they’re going across the country, though (and if it’s really important- Cassie’s not a fighter and is justifiably nervous about going alone) Cassie can cheat and cut through the Hedge, while Sammy is stuck taking mundane transportation, and has to be really careful about arrival times so ey doesn’t wind up caught by the sunrise.
23. If you had to walk home through a bad neighbourhood late at night, would you feel safer in the company of 7 (Denise) or 8 (Dr. Lucas)?
Dr. Lucas. Denise is one of the things that go bump in the night I’d need protection from.
24. 1 (Prudence) and 9 (Sammy) reluctantly team up to save the world from the threat posed by 4 (Iris)'s sinister secret organization. 11 (Cassie) volunteers to help them, but it is later discovered that s/he is actually a spy for 4 (Iris). Meanwhile, 4 (Iris) has kidnapped 12 (Michelle) in an attempt to force their surrender. Following the wise advice of 5 (Vetiver), they seek out 3 (Kelsey), who gives them what they need to complete their quest. What title would you give this fic?

Iris kidnapping Michelle is just weird. Although I guess the blood bond is definitely coercion, even if it’s not deliberate. And Sammy would be all about liberating ghouls, and maybe Prudence could be convinced to go along with em. I guess the Camarilla could count as a sinister secret organization? Iris is hardly important, but it’s secret from the rest of the world, at least, if not from vampires. (I think my only other option is some kind of cabal of librarians, or an underground painter’s guild “rediscovering” old works by supposedly-dead artists.) Cassie’s all about Divine Right of Kings, but only for changelings, so she’d probably have to be under some form of Dominate. (Poor kid, but it would also solve the problem of her being crap at lying.) Vetiver giving wise advice is about the only thing in this fic that fits (she even has fortune-telling powers in canon), because Kelsey, again, is the last person you’d expect to be useful. Although I guess she just has the MacGuffin- maybe it’s proof that Iris is illegitimate? That would only get her out of power, though, and it would be the rest of the Cam doing it, which isn’t exactly what they’re aiming for. Although I suppose that kind of hopeless ending would fit the World of Darkness pretty well.
This actually almost makes sense.
I’m awful at titles, so I’m sticking with Shakespeare quotes- I thought of using something from “Now, gods, stand up for bastards” but “If Our Father Would Sleep” looks way too religious in title case and “These Late Eclipses” was taken. :P (Excellent King Lear AU fic, if anyone’s curious: http://a-t-rain.livejournal.com/tag/these%20late%20eclipses) I think I’d go with “Scourge And Minister”- Iris is serving a somewhat similar function to Polonius here, since they’ve taken out the functionary but the corrupt system (or monarch) is still in place.
